Compound Exercises

02nd October 2017

A great workout with results without spending hours at the gym? Yes please – line up here and say hello to compound exercises!

Compound exercises involve more than one muscle group unlike isolation exercises, which isolate a muscle group by concentrating on that one group of muscles. They also use more than one joint at a time.

For the most time-efficient workouts, compound exercises are recommended because 8-10 exercises can stimulate all the major muscles in the body and create the greatest change in body composition in the shortest time. As an added bonus, compound exercises help develop the body proportionately, however they need to be performed correctly to obtain maximal gains. So if your schedule calls for reduced exercise time, compound exercises are the way to go.

The most common compound exercises:

  • Bench press
  • Overhead press
  • Dip
  • Deadlift
  • Pull up
  • Cable pulldown
  • Row
  • Squat
